THE GRAND MASSIF

Samoens, listed as a "Monument Historique" and situated in the heart of the Grand Massif, is a town really brimming with Alpine charm. This is an exceptionally picturesque area in Haute-Savoie, within easy reach of Geneva airport. Approximately 50 minutes by road from the airport is the village of Morillon, with Verchaix just across the river on the opposite side of the Giffre Valley. At the top of the valley is the lovely village of Sixt Fer à Cheval, known as one of the prettiest villages in the Alps. The "Cascade du Rouget" waterfall, not far from Sixt, is especially impressive. Flaine and Les Carroz complete the Grand Massif area.

Col de Joux Plane - Cross-country skiing area

In winter, skiers are spoilt for choice with 265kms of linked pistes offering plenty of variety for skiers of all levels. Fabulous views of Mont Blanc can be enjoyed from many pistes, but one of the best is from the top of the Grandes Platières cable car (2,480 m) above Flaine. Not only is the Grand Massif less than an hour from Geneva, it is just a short distance away from other popular resorts such as Les Gets, Morzine and Chamonix. In summer, Morzine can be reached via the spectacular mountain road over the Col de Joux Plane, with breathtaking views down onto the Giffre Valley and across to Mont Blanc. This road is closed in winter, apart from access to the cross-country skiing area from the Samoens direction.
